Ballet novels can turn airy fast. City of Night Birds sounds like it remembers that beauty usually costs somebody something.
That is the part I trust. I want art in a novel, but I also want obsession, rivalry, sore feet, vanity, and the private damage people hide behind discipline.
If this one really keeps all of that in the frame, it is exactly my kind of literary book, graceful on the surface and mean enough underneath to matter.
